Electricity Markets & Competition

Throughout the world, the electricity industry is in a transition from efficiency-based load-meeting systems, to market based systems. This provides great challenges for companies that have traditionally only needed to concern themselves with technical provision of services and efficiency of those services. Market based companies must still concern themselves with efficiency, but also require a variety of contracts, must make market bids and offers, and must compete on a daily basis with other market participants facing these same challenges.

Orbit Systems are experts in the field of Electricity markets, having delivered products and solutions in a wide variety of areas to many different kinds of market participants.

  • ROCMO: A data reporting tool that uses maps or hierarchies for organising data, and allows reporting of data in grids, charts and graphs, and combining or overlaying graphs.
  • Dublin: A Cournot-based oligopoly model that incorporates multiple nodes and hydro reservoirs. This model was successfully used to show the Commerce Commission the effects on competition of Contact Energy’s $500 million purchase of a power station in New Zealand.
  • CASm: A model that assesses the competitive effects of mergers and acquisitions in the USA. It produces output in the form required by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in its merger pre-screening guidelines.
