Case Study: Procter & Gamble

Warehouse Management System

As one of the largest manufacturing organizations in the world, Procter & Gamble continually seek methods of improving all of their processes and systems. Orbit Systems (and our staff before that) has been helping P&G develop very sophisticated systems that improve systems world-wide for over 10 years now.

Some of the systems that Orbit Systems has developed for Procter & Gamble include:

  • A scheduling system (AutoScheduler) that provides sophisticated functionality to optimize warehouse usage and reduce cost, resource usage, stock shortages and late shipments.
  • Truck loading software (AutoLoader) that optimizes truck-loading operations, considering load stability, pallet loading, axle weight limits and loading/unloading requirements.
  • Shipment planning software (AutoVLB) that considers shipping priorities for multi-trailer volumes and determines the number of trailers required and the best configuration for each trailer.
  • Warehouse space utilization software (Spacesaver) that gives instructions about saving space by consolidating and re-ordering products.

In a recent press statement, P&G estimated savings due to AutoScheduler of USD 4 million per year at one site alone. AutoScheduler is currently installed in over 15 sites in the USA, Canada, the UK and mainland Europe.

Savings due to AutoVLB are estimated at USD 400k per year on a single lane, with total savings estimated at several million per year.

SpaceSaver typically frees up between 5% and 10% of warehouse space when it is first run, though we have seen results of over 15% in some warehouses.
